The Ultimate Guide to Moving & Storage in Dallas
Moving to a new place can be an exciting experience. The logistics of it all, on the other hand, can be a royal pain in the keister. Thankfully Dallas New in Town has done most of the legwork for you so you can better plan and prepare for your big move to the Big D.
The following should cover everything you need to know about moving and storage in the Dallas area.
Dallas Apartment Locators
First thing on your to-do list should be landing the perfect pad. Luckily Dallas is like a Mecca when it comes to finding a nice apartment, even if you’re on a tight budget. Even better news is that there are also a number of reputable apartment locator services that will basically do all the dirty work for you (i.e. searching, scheduling viewings and even negotiating rent). The kicker is, most of them do this for free (they get paid by the property managers to find good tenants).
Of course, as with anything else, not all apartment locators are created equal. Your best bet is to go with one of the following:
Dallas Apartment Locators – This locator service offers an impressive database of available apartments, condos and town homes for rent in almost every neighborhood in the Dallas area, many of which haven’t been advertised to the public. Their service is free and also includes a signing bonus of either a cash rebate or two hours of professional moving service. Sweet!
LUX Locators – This service is run by an experienced, attentive realtor and offers assistance with locating apartments in Dallas, from Uptown to Downtown and just about every area in between. Like Advanced Locators, LUX also offers a signing bonus of a free move or a Visa gift card. There’s even the option to search on your own and still collect the bonus, which is pretty cool.
Smart City Locators – As their website states, this free, full service apartment locating company specializes in matching qualified renters with “kickass apartments.” (Hard to argue with that little gem.) You just let them know what you’re looking for and they’re off and running to find you the perfect place to match your needs and budget. Smart City doesn’t currently offer a signing bonus, but they do have a referral program.
DIY Apartment Hunters
Maybe you’re just not into the whole “apartment locator service” thing. That’s totally cool, and there are plenty of options available to help you snag that perfect place without the help of a professional. For instance, check these sites out:
Apartments.com – This site contains a huge database of detailed and accurate apartment listings, including full descriptions and high quality pictures (which is especially important if you’re moving from a long distance and can’t easily get there to view the property). It has an innovative search tool that even offers a “plan commute” option so you can easily find places that are located close to your office.
Rent.com – The Rent.com site is pretty awesome (there’s also an app for searching on the go). Not only does it include a huge listing of properties, but it also provides the option to “look inside” through HD photos, virtual property tours, and detailed floor plans. They also collect reviews from real tenants so you can get an honest opinion of what an apartment is really like. Pretty awesome.
Dallas.craigslist.com – If you really want to live on the edge, check out the Housing section on Craigslist (just kidding – as long as you’re careful, it’s a perfectly good resource). There are actually quite a few nice properties listed here, so it’s worth a look.
Roommates.com – Looking for someone to share your space (and your expenses)? This is a great resource for safely locating a good match. Once you set up a free account, you can browse potential candidates and screen them before you reach out and make a connection. Gotta love technology!
Dallas Moving Companies
Once you’ve figured out where your new digs will be, the next step is arranging to get all your stuff from point A to point B, hopefully still intact and with nothing missing. Like apartment locators, there are a crapton of moving companies to pick from, and some are better than others. We recommend choosing one of the following:
Black Tie Moving – This service offers door-to-door moves, whether it’s from the other side of town or across the country. They are a full-service moving company, which means they can basically handle everything for you, including packing, loading, transport, unloading and placement. Or, if you prefer, you can share responsibilities, like do the packing yourself and let them handle the rest. Great service and affordable pricing to boot.
AB Moving – AB Moving is another awesome company that offers full service moving as well as supplies, like boxes, etc. What’s kind of cool about this one is that they offer low cost rates with the choice of either hourly or flat rate pricing. This is perfect for those of us who are watching our pennies. They also regularly offer specials and you can get a free quote right from their website.
Dallas Movers Pro – This company is a bit smaller than the others, but we wanted to give them a shout out because what they lack in size they more than make up for in exceptional, personalized service. They can handle local and long-distance moves and will customize a moving plan that will suit your needs and budget. Definitely worth considering.
If none of these tickle your fancy, you can also conduct your own comparison of moving companies using a site like Unpakt, which allows you to enter your moving details and compare services and prices instantly. You can even book your move (including entering your entire inventory) right online.
The Consumer Affairs website is also a great place to check the reviews of the various movers you’re considering to make sure they’re on the up-and-up.
If you don’t mind handling at least a portion of the moving process yourself, there’s also the option of U-Pack. How it works is you take care of the loading and unloading of all your stuff and they handle the driving. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight budget.
If you need to store your furniture or other belongings in the interim, there are several options available to you. Here’s who we recommend:
U-Haul – Whether you’re looking for temporary storage during your move or need something more long-term, U-Haul has a number of options, including self-storage and U-Box storage/moving containers. There are a ton of locations all over the Dallas area, so it shouldn’t be too challenging to find one near your new apartment.
Self Storage – This site is an aggregator service that you can use to search, compare and select a self-storage unit that suits your needs. Check reviews from other customers, see upfront pricing and even reserve your space right from the website. Super convenient.
Extra Space Storage – This company is the second largest operator of self-storage facilities in the U.S., and there are new facilities cropping up on an almost daily basis (with plenty to pick from in the Dallas area). The website lets you compare and check pricing to find the perfect storage option.
Ready for your big move? These Dallas moving and storage resources should help you plan and prepare to make a smooth and uneventful transition from one place to the other. What are you waiting for? Get packing, and we’ll see you when you get here!
